Description
Our Counselor in Training (CIT) program is a two session experience for rising 11th graders filled with hands-on work experience, leadership development, child care training, service and fun, preparing them to transition from campers to staff. The CIT Director is a Unit Head with leadership training and teen experience who supervises a team of staff and independently creates a meaningful and enriching experience for the CITs, fostering their growth and development as emerging leaders at camp.
Responsibilities:
- Supervise and mentor the CITs, providing guidance, support, and feedback to help them navigate their roles and responsibilities as future staff members.
- Create a leadership development curriculum for the CITs, designing regular learning sessions that utilize the expertise of other staff members in camp and provide opportunities for the CITs to learn and grow.
- Facilitate CIT rotations, programs, and special events, including the camp Banquet, coordinating with other camp staff to ensure that the CITs have a well-rounded experience and opportunities to contribute to the camp community.
- Plan and implement nighttime activities for CITs, creating engaging and enjoyable programs that promote team-building, leadership skills, and social interaction among the CITs.
- Supervise the CIT counselors. Manage their daily activity schedules. Facilitate check-ins, provide feedback to and formally evaluate them.
- Provide guidance to all counselors and specialists for working with CITs, offering support and strategies for effectively integrating CITs into their respective program areas and fostering positive mentorship relationships.
- Set up system of feedback and evaluation of the CITs, in coordination with their placement staff (counselors and specialists), offering feedback on their performance, growth, and areas for improvement.
- Serve as a liaison between the staff and CITs, fostering communication and collaboration between the two groups and ensuring that CITs feel supported and included in the overall camp community.
- Communicate with parents before and during camp about camper progress and needs
- Prepare for, lead and facilitate daily unit meetings for your campers and staff
- Serve as a member of Camp Leadership Team supporting administrative and management agenda of camp.
- Be tuned into each specific campers’ needs, and work with bunk counselors to assist campers when challenges arise
- Be a positive and enthusiastic source of encouragement for your staff and campers
- Be a role model in your professionalism, maturity, and respect for camp policies
- Be aware of equipment and facilities to ensure proper utilization, care, and maintenance is adhered to
Requirements
- Experience successfully and happily working with teens
- Experience successfully and happily supervising others as part of a team
- Must be at least 21 years old
- A positive, happy, patient, and collaborative nature
- Experience planning and implementing activities for groups, or experiences utilizing similar skills
- Ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse groups of campers and staff
- Ability to observe and assess camper and staff behavior, and provide redirection as needed
- Demonstrated ability to create curriculum focusing on leadership and child care
- Ability to give and receive feedback
- Leadership experience in a residential camp setting preferred
- Must be willing to live on site from June 5 -August 12
