Description
Unit Heads are the camp directors for their unit, responsible for the overall happiness and well-being of the campers and staff in their unit. Depending on the summer, size of the unit, and staffing, a unit could have one unit head, a unit head and an assistant, or co-unit heads. In each of these scenarios, the specific delegation of these responsibilities shifts, and those responsibilities are to be clearly delineated prior to the start of the session.
Responsibilities:
- Supervise unit counselors and specialists, coaching and supporting their success throughout the summer. This includes: regular observation, on-the-spot job coaching, a mid-session verbal check-in, and an end-of-session written evaluation, reviewed with the staff person.
- Know all the campers and staff in your unit, and their mental, physical and emotional well-being at all times.
- Call all campers in the two weeks prior to their arrival , welcoming them and their parents.
- Come to the daily Touch Base meeting organized and prepared to discuss individual and group concerns bunk-by-bunk from a solutions-based proactive approach, seeking input and strategies when needed.
- Train staff and oversee the process of completing bunk DCRs.
- Responsible for the schedule and program of the unit, holding staff and campers accountable for wake up/bedtime, timeliness, and participation.
- Responsible for unit administrative responsibilities including Letter Writing Days, Counselor Postcards, Sociograms, Laundry, Bar/Bat Mitzvah tutoring, campers leaving/coming, bunk activity rescheduling, and sick campers.
- Responsible for unit evening programs, from delegating programs to staff teams through to clean up.
- Oversight of unit tables at meals, including camper and staff dietary needs, birthdays, food quantities, serving efficiency, and decorum.
- Partner with the Head of Jewish Life to oversee all aspects of Shabbat Prep for your unit
- Be present around camp, be on time to all meals and programs, and spend time at activities with your unit every day, spending time with each bunk throughout the session.
- Return parent phone calls within 12 hours of receipt, logging the call in CampMinder.
- Build Unit identity through unit cheers, songs, jokes, special theme days, special events, and bonding activities.
- Lead nightly staff meetings and staff bonding activities.
- Lead Unit training during Staff Week.
- In partnership with the assigned Trip Staff, responsible for the success and safety of Unit Camping Trips.
- Responsible for Unit oversight when out-of-camp for arrival/departure days, day trips, and field trips.
- Responsible for scheduling and coordinating staff time off and days off schedules.
- Participate in counselor pairings and camper bunking meetings.
- Be a part of the all-camp Leadership Team, assisting in the overall running of camp, helping wherever is needed, and participating in daily and weekly meetings, training, and OD.
Requirements
- Experience successfully and happily working with kids and youth
- Experience successfully and happily supervising others as part of a team
- Must be at least 21 years old
- A positive, happy, patient, and collaborative nature
- Experience planning and implementing activities for groups, or experiences utilizing similar skills
- Ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse groups of campers and staff
- Ability to observe and assess camper and staff behavior, and provide redirection as needed
- Ability to give and receive feedback
- Leadership experience in a residential camp setting preferred
- Must be willing to live on site from June 5 -August 12
